SEC Unveils Bold Strategy To Eradicate Ponzi Schemes And Revolutionize Commodities Market In 2025
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding investors, stating that its priority for 2025 is to ramp up the fight against Ponzi and pyramid schemes while promoting legitimate investment opportunities.
Dr. Emomotimi Agama, SEC’s Director General, shared this vision in his New Year message to the capital market community. He expressed optimism for the opportunities ahead and emphasized the Commission’s focus on strengthening market integrity, boosting investor confidence, and stimulating economic growth.
Dr. Agama explained that the SEC’s dual mandate to regulate and develop Nigeria’s capital market would guide its actions in 2025. He stressed the importance of integrating the Nigerian capital market into the broader economy as a central goal for the year.
“Enforcement is key to effective regulation,” Agama added, detailing plans to enhance investigative processes and improve accountability in the market. He further emphasized that the SEC would update its regulatory framework to better tackle issues such as insider trading, which undermines market fairness.
Transparency is another priority for the Commission, which plans to implement new measures aimed at enhancing visibility and trust in securities transactions.
Agama also highlighted the Commission’s efforts to improve the operations of the Investments and Securities Tribunal (IST), ensuring fair and timely dispute resolutions.
In addition, 2025 will see SEC’s focus on strengthening the legal framework surrounding Nigeria’s commodities market, an essential sector for the nation’s economic development. Agama noted that SEC is committed to building a robust regulatory environment for the commodities sector, enhancing Nigeria’s position as an agrarian economy with a diverse range of commodities.
“We are excited to play a part in Nigeria’s growing commodities market. This year, we will work on creating solid regulatory foundations that foster growth,” Agama said.
Concluding, Agama invited all stakeholders to collaborate with the SEC to make 2025 a transformative year for Nigeria’s capital market, ultimately benefiting the entire economy.
“We aim to steer the capital market in a direction that brings development to every Nigerian household,” he stated.
