Senate Confirms Justice Oyewole As Supreme Court Justice

According to Ireporter Online, the Senate on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole (JCA) as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The confirmation came after the Senate considered and adopted the report of its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, which reviewed the nomination. The committee is chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central).

Presenting the committee’s findings, Senator Adegbonmire informed the chamber that Justice Oyewole was found to be eminently qualified and competent to serve at the apex court, having satisfied all constitutional and professional requirements.

He thereafter moved a motion urging the Senate to receive and consider the committee’s report on the confirmation of the nominee as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier transmitted a letter to the Senate requesting the confirmation of Justice Oyewole for elevation to the nation’s highest court. The correspondence, which was read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, cited Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) as the legal basis for the nomination.

In the letter, the President expressed confidence in Justice Oyewole’s capacity to serve at the Supreme Court and urged the Senate to consider and confirm the nomination expeditiously.

Following the presentation of the President’s request, the Senate President referred the matter to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for legislative scrutiny.

After examining the nominee’s credentials, judicial experience, track record, and responses during the screening exercise, the committee recommended his confirmation.

The Senate subsequently adopted the recommendation without objection, thereby formally confirming Justice Oyewole’s appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
