Senate Hits Pause: Electoral Act Amendment Decision Postponed After 4-Hour Debate

According to Ireporter Online, the passage of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026, remained unresolved on Tuesday after the Senate spent more than four hours deliberating behind closed doors. Lawmakers were unable to reach a final decision, further delaying amendments considered crucial for Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of upcoming elections.

The upper chamber began by reviewing the consolidated report of a seven-member ad hoc committee tasked with harmonising senators’ submissions on the bill. After initial discussions in open session, the Senate moved into a closed-door meeting to examine the committee’s recommendations in detail.

When plenary reconvened, Senate President Godswill Akpabio did not announce the outcome, instead adjourning proceedings to the next legislative day. The development leaves the bill’s fate uncertain.

The committee, chaired by Senator Niyi Adegbomore, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, also includes Senators Adamu Aliero, Aminu Tambuwal, Adams Oshiomhole, Danjuma Goje, Tony Nwoye, and Titus Zam. It was established last week following extensive debate on the bill, with a mandate to compile and streamline senators’ views and present a unified report.

Sources told Ireporter Online that the documents submitted for review contained detailed proposals aimed at improving the country’s electoral laws. The session comes after an earlier deferral, intended to give lawmakers additional time for a more thorough examination of the bill.

Despite expectations that Tuesday’s deliberation would produce a decisive outcome, the lack of a formal announcement has heightened uncertainty around the amendment process. Nigerians now await the Senate’s next move on the contentious bill.
