Senate Moves To Introduce Single Six-Year Term For President And Governors

According to Ireporter Online, the Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, has disclosed that a new legislative proposal will soon be introduced seeking to establish a single six-year tenure for Presidents and State Governors in Nigeria, beginning after the 2027 general elections.

He explained that the proposed bill is designed to reform the current political structure, which allows elected officials to serve two terms of four years each. Bamidele noted that the intention behind the proposal is to encourage more focused governance by eliminating the distractions associated with re-election campaigns.

The Senate Leader further stated that the bill is expected to be among the first major legislative initiatives to be presented in the next session of the National Assembly. According to him, the existing two-term system often compels political office holders to begin strategizing for re-election early in their first term, thereby reducing the time and attention devoted to governance.

Under the proposed arrangement, elected leaders would serve a single, non-renewable term of six years. Bamidele argued that this structure would reduce political pressure and allow leaders to concentrate fully on delivering development outcomes throughout their tenure.

He added that the absence of a second-term ambition would likely enhance commitment and improve performance in public office. While acknowledging that the proposal may generate differing opinions, he maintained that lawmakers have a responsibility to introduce ideas aimed at strengthening governance in the country.

Bamidele also emphasized that laws must remain adaptable to changing societal needs and evolving governance challenges. If eventually introduced and passed by the National Assembly, the proposal would require constitutional amendments before it can take effect.
