Senate, Reps Suspend Legislative Work Until July 22 for Buhari’s Burial
The National Assembly has announced the suspension of all legislative activities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives until Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London after a prolonged illness.
This decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana. Acting on the joint directive of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, the suspension aims to show national respect for Buhari’s legacy and his contributions to Nigeria.
In the statement, Ogunlana urged all lawmakers to reschedule their official duties to fully participate in the burial arrangements for the late president.
The leadership of both chambers extended condolences to the Buhari family, especially to his widow Aisha Buhari, his children, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large. They praised Buhari for his unwavering commitment to national unity and the integrity he brought to leadership.
Born in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari initially governed Nigeria as a military ruler from 1984 to 1985 before returning as a civilian president for two consecutive terms from 2015 to 2023. His tenure was marked by repeated medical trips abroad, drawing mixed public reactions.
Since the announcement of his death, a period of national mourning has commenced, with flags at half-mast and tributes pouring in from across political divides.
