Senators’ Hefty Paychecks: N27.47 Billion Annual Cost Raises Eyebrows

Startling revelation, it has been reported that the federal government is spending an astonishing N27.47 billion annually on the salaries and allowances of 109 senators. This figure represents a staggering 1,861% more than the amount approved by the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFAC).

The news, highlighted by THE WHISTLER, stems from statements made by Senator Sumaila Kawu of Kano South. Kawu disclosed that his monthly take-home pay amounts to over N21 million, despite official figures from RMFAC indicating a monthly salary and allowances of just N1.06 million per senator.

A Discrepancy of Epic Proportions

According to RMFAC, each senator’s salary and allowances should total N12.72 million annually, with a government-wide expenditure of approximately N1.4 billion for all senators combined. However, the actual annual expenditure on each senator is around N252 million, leading to an overall cost of N27.47 billion for all senators. This figure significantly overshoots RMFAC’s approved limits.

In contrast, the actual monthly pay reported by Kawu, which includes allowances, is 1,881% higher than the RMFAC-approved amount.

Public Outcry and Economic Concerns

The high remuneration package for senators comes at a time when the Nigerian government is grappling with significant revenue shortfalls and rising public debt. From January to April this year, revenue underperformed by 56.13% against projections, while public debt surged from N97.34 trillion to N121.67 trillion.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the senators’ pay. Benson Upah, Head of Information at NLC, criticized the disparity between senators’ earnings and the meager N70,000 minimum wage, which he argues is inadequate for workers. Upah lamented the social inequality and called for a fairer distribution of resources.

Economic experts have also voiced concerns about the vast disparity between senators’ earnings and the financial struggles faced by ordinary Nigerians. Patrick Ajudua, President of the New Dimension Shareholders Association (NDSA), described the situation as “very unfortunate,” noting the contrast between the high earnings of political leaders and the widespread poverty in the country. He called for immediate reforms to address these issues, including reducing the cost of governance and ensuring a living wage for all workers.

Legal and Financial Implications

Mr. David Adonri, Managing Director of Hicap Securities Limited, questioned the legality of such high earnings for lawmakers. He suggested that these salaries might breach existing regulations and could lead to increased recurrent expenditure, leaving less for capital projects.

Adonri highlighted the potential negative impact on Nigeria’s budget, emphasizing that inflated salaries contribute significantly to recurrent expenditure and diminish the funds available for critical infrastructure and development projects.
