SGF Akume: Bloodshed in Benue Will Soon End

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has assured Nigerians that the era of violence and bloodshed in Benue State and the wider North Central region is nearing an end.

Speaking in Makurdi on Wednesday, Akume emphasized the federal government’s commitment to restoring peace, stating that President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda prioritizes the safety of every Nigerian. He said, “The President has directed security agencies to find and punish those responsible for the killings.”

Akume’s comments followed Tinubu’s recent visit to Benue, where he assessed the situation and met victims of the conflict. According to the SGF, the President was deeply affected by what he saw and has issued clear directives for peace restoration.

He commended the efforts of security personnel operating in the troubled areas and urged leaders at all levels—including politicians, traditional rulers, and community heads—to unite for peace. “We must rise above our differences and speak with one voice,” he said.

Akume called on the Benue State Government to revive peace initiatives introduced during his time as governor, encouraging collective societal backing for sustainable peace.

He also revealed that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is addressing the humanitarian needs of those displaced by the conflict.

Akume stressed that resolving the crisis requires both military intervention and development initiatives, declaring, “This administration won’t rest until Benue people can sleep with their eyes closed. The days of impunity are over.”
