Shekarau, Yakasai Lead New Group To Strengthen Northern Nigeria’s Political And Economic Influence

In a bid to restore Northern Nigeria’s prominence in the nation’s political and economic spheres, a coalition of prominent northern leaders has established the League of Northern Democrats (LND). The group, led by former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, as its interim chairman, aims to unify the region and strengthen its influence within Nigeria.

The LND, consisting of 226 members including former governors, federal lawmakers, and notable businessmen, seeks to prioritize the development of Northern Nigeria. The convener, Umar Ardo, and interim Secretary, Emmanuel Jime, are spearheading efforts to bring the region’s diverse leaders together for this cause.

Prominent members of the LND include Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, Senator Ibrahim Ida, Dr. Jamilu Isyaka Gwamna, and Kabir Tafida, among others. At a recent meeting held at the Yar’adua Centre in Abuja, the group announced its plans to host a strategic summit to outline their vision for the North’s political and economic revival.

The LND emphasized its commitment to fostering unity across Northern Nigeria and declared its mission to be solely focused on the region’s progress, free from any personal or external interests. The group also plans to engage with key stakeholders in the region, including former Heads of State, vice presidents, Senate presidents, and prominent business figures, to garner support for their initiatives.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the LND stated, “Our immediate priority is to ensure the political unity and economic development of Northern Nigeria. We are determined to reposition the North as a leading force in Nigeria’s political landscape.”

The group’s strategic summit, slated for a later date, is expected to be a significant step towards achieving its ambitious goals for the Northern region.
