Shock in Kwara as Military Nabs 12 Alleged Terrorists During Swift Operation

The Nigerian Army has announced the arrest of 12 individuals linked to terrorist activities reportedly carried out by a breakaway faction of Boko Haram known as the ‘Mahmuda’ group.

According to reports, the Mahmuda faction is believed to have established a stronghold within the Kainji Lake National Park, located in northern Kwara State. The arrests were confirmed by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Major General Obinna Onubogu, during an operational assessment tour of military formations in Kaiama and Baruten Local Government Areas on Saturday.

The purpose of the GOC’s visit was to evaluate troop welfare and gather first-hand intelligence on ongoing operations.

General Onubogu disclosed that the suspects were apprehended at various locations during a series of military operations across the Kainji Lake National Park and its surrounding border communities. Among those arrested, two are confirmed members of the armed group, while the others are believed to be collaborators.

He noted that the counter-insurgency mission, tagged “Operation Park Strike Four,” is focused on ridding the park of bandits and eliminating criminal networks operating within the area.

Speaking to the press, Maj. Gen. Onubogu praised the efforts of troops, noting that they have already combed more than 90 kilometers from Kemanji into the heart of Kainji Forest, where the insurgents had set up base.

The federal government has commended the success of the operation, recognizing the dedication of military personnel in reclaiming the park and securing the surrounding regions.

During his visit, General Onubogu also met with the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Sheu Omar, and the head of the Kemanji community, Shao’ki Aliyu Siki-Muhammed, to assure them of continued security efforts and to boost the morale of the local population.

Acting on directives from the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, troops from the 2 Division have been deployed across key border communities in Kwara and Niger States, including the Kainji Lake Forest, to flush out armed elements threatening the peace and safety of residents.
