Shocking Revelations: Gombe Borrowed ₦1.3bn Monthly for Salaries Under Previous Government — Governor Alleges
Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has disclosed that the previous administration in the state relied heavily on borrowing approximately ₦1.3 billion monthly to settle workers’ salaries between 2013 and 2019.
According to official remarks delivered at a ceremony held at the Government House Banquet Hall to disburse gratuities to local government retirees, Yahaya criticized the financial model adopted by his predecessor, describing it as reckless and unsustainable. The Governor asserted that borrowing to pay salaries reflected a breakdown in fiscal responsibility and governance.
Speaking at the event, Yahaya stated, “For six consecutive years, the administration before us depended on loans—₦1.3 billion monthly—to pay salaries. That is a clear mark of poor leadership.”
While Yahaya did not name his predecessor directly, the period referenced aligns with the tenure of Ibrahim Dankwambo, the current Senator representing Gombe North.
The Governor highlighted that his administration has since reversed the trend by enforcing financial discipline and empowering the local government areas to independently manage their resources. He noted that all 11 LGAs in the state are now operating from a sound financial footing, free from dependence on loans to meet basic obligations.
Yahaya emphasized that fiscal prudence under his leadership has enabled the state to make consistent payments to retirees. He announced that since taking office in 2019, his government has disbursed a cumulative total of ₦25.626 billion in gratuities to retired workers at both state and local government levels.
Of that total, ₦2.06 billion was released on Tuesday alone, furthering what Yahaya described as his administration’s unwavering commitment to honouring those who served the state diligently.
“We are not just paying debts—we are restoring dignity. Our retirees must not be forgotten. Their sacrifices built this state,” the Governor said.
He reaffirmed that the financial reforms implemented since 2019 are designed to ensure long-term stability and fairness in civil service obligations. Yahaya also reiterated his government’s focus on responsible leadership and sustainable economic governance for future generations.
