The lawmaker representing Somolu Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Abiodun Orekoya, has rolled out an empowerment initiative aimed at improving the economic wellbeing of residents within the constituency. According to Ireporter Online, the programme was designed to support youths, artisans, traders and small business owners through skill enhancement and financial assistance.

The empowerment exercise attracted beneficiaries from different parts of the constituency and featured the distribution of vocational tools, business equipment and cash grants to support entrepreneurship and self-reliance. Items distributed included grinding machines, sewing machines, deep freezers, makeup and barbing kits with generators, hair dryers, printers, ovens, gas cylinders accompanied by cartons of noodles, as well as mini buses popularly known as “Korope,” which were allocated to six drivers to boost commercial transportation services.

Further support was extended to food vendors, who received cash grants of N100,000 each to expand their businesses, while petty traders and market women benefited from grants of N50,000 each to strengthen their trading activities.

Speaking at the event, Orekoya explained that the empowerment programme aligns with his ongoing commitment to promoting economic independence, skill acquisition and entrepreneurship among residents of Somolu Constituency I. He urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the tools and funds provided, assuring constituents that additional empowerment initiatives would be organised to reach more people across the area.
