State Police Bill Set For Senate Consideration Today
According to Ireporter Online, the Senate is poised to advance a significant constitutional amendment aimed at enabling the establishment of state police across Nigeria, as lawmakers prepare to deliberate on the proposal this week.
The amendment, which seeks to alter provisions of the 1999 Constitution, is expected to be considered during the legislative activities commencing Tuesday. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele disclosed that the National Assembly has prioritized the bill due to its urgency, separating it from other ongoing constitutional amendment processes.
Bamidele explained that there is widespread national consensus in favour of state policing, noting that key political leaders and stakeholders believe it has become necessary in addressing the country’s escalating security challenges.
He further revealed that consultations on the proposal have reached an advanced stage, involving top government officials, including the leadership of the National Assembly, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and other relevant stakeholders.
Expressing optimism, the Senate Leader stated that the bill is expected to secure approval within the week, bringing months of deliberation on the matter closer to resolution. He added that lawmakers are determined to avoid further delays amid growing calls for reforms in Nigeria’s security structure.
Bamidele also noted that President Bola Tinubu and state governors have expressed support for the initiative. Following Senate approval, the proposed amendment will be transmitted to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration.
For the amendment to become law, it must be approved by at least two-thirds of the state legislatures before being forwarded to the President for assent. Only after completing this constitutional process will the establishment of state police become a legal reality.
