Super Eagles Aim For Victory In AFCON 2025 Opener Against Tanzania

According to reports, the Super Eagles are determined to start their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a victory when they face Tanzania on Tuesday, December 23. Head coach Eric Chelle emphasized the importance of a strong opening performance during a pre-match press conference at Fes Stadium.

“We are happy to be here. This is the first match of the AFCON, and the first game is always crucial. We definitely want to win this game,” Chelle stated.

When questioned about whether his future with the national team hinges on winning the tournament, Chelle clarified that his focus is entirely on the competition and his players. “I am only focused on this tournament. I will meet with the football association later, but for now, my attention is fully on the tournament and my squad,” he said.

Addressing concerns over the absence of key defenders William Troost-Ekong, Benjamin Fredrick, and Ola Aina, Chelle remained confident in his team. “I am not worried. I trust my players. While it would have been ideal to have everyone available, we will work extensively on our defence. Success is about the whole team, not just the defenders,” he explained.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi shared the coach’s optimism, highlighting the significance of the opening match for team momentum. “Morale in the camp is high, and everyone is ready. This game sets the tone for our campaign, and the focus is on winning,” Ndidi said.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s run to the AFCON final in the Ivory Coast, Ndidi stressed that the team aims to maintain high standards. “We learned a lot from the last AFCON. Reaching the final was an achievement, but we must aim higher. Everyone is aware of past setbacks, including missing the World Cup, so our focus is entirely on this tournament,” he added.

The Super Eagles’ opening match against Tanzania is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, at Fes Stadium in Morocco.
