Super Eagles Receive Long-Awaited Housing Rewards From FG In Morocco,Video

The Federal Government has fulfilled its long-standing pledge to reward members of Nigeria’s Super Eagles squad who finished as runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), providing each player with a house nearly two years after the promise was made.

The handover took place on Monday in Fez, Morocco, through the National Sports Commission (NSC), just a day before Nigeria’s opening match at the 2025 AFCON.

The Super Eagles, coached at the time by Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro, secured second place at the 2023 tournament following a 2-1 loss to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the final. Upon returning to Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu honoured the players and officials with national awards under the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and pledged housing and land grants for the squad and backroom staff.

The housing rewards were officially delivered at the team’s Moroccan base as they prepare for their Group C opener against Tanzania on Tuesday. The team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, confirmed via a WhatsApp group for media updates that the Federal Government, through the NSC, had fulfilled its 2024 housing promise.

Chairman of the NSC, Shehu Dikko, Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Abdul Ningi, confirmed that the national honours had been issued in line with existing awards held by the players. They also noted that all housing and land grants approved by President Tinubu had been fully processed, with Certificates of Occupancy officially issued.

Now under Franco-Malian coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles return to continental competition amid high expectations after narrowly missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They will face Tunisia on Saturday before concluding the group stage against Uganda next Tuesday.

The gesture echoes similar honours extended to other Nigerian national teams this year. Members of the Super Falcons received national honours and $100,000 each after winning a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, while the senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, were also promised rewards following their fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket victory.
