Tambuwal Appeals To U.S. To Support Nigeria’s Fight Against Rising Insecurity

Former Sokoto State Governor and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has appealed to the United States to reassess its stance on Nigeria’s security challenges and extend support to the country’s fight against insecurity.

Speaking in Sokoto over the weekend, Tambuwal expressed concern that the U.S. President appears to rely on misleading narratives, lacking a full understanding of Nigeria’s security situation. He emphasized that the violence in the country has no religious or political affiliation, noting that common criminals target innocent citizens indiscriminately.

According to Tambuwal, the marauders do not represent any specific religion, tribe, or ethnic group, and he urged the international community, particularly the United States, to assist Nigeria in combating insecurity. He highlighted that the North-Western states of Katsina, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara are the most affected by these attacks.

Tambuwal stressed that the U.S. should move beyond stereotypes to understand the realities facing Nigeria, as the nation seeks global support to overcome its security challenges. He noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration requires the cooperation of all Nigerians, describing insecurity as a collective issue demanding collective action.

Recalling past initiatives, Tambuwal mentioned that the Senate had supported the acquisition of advanced air assets, including Tucano fighter jets, during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure. However, he claimed that the United States did not provide the full complement necessary for effective counter-insurgency efforts.

He urged for a united national response, free from political, religious, or ethnic biases, and called on stakeholders to strengthen anti-terrorism measures, harmonize efforts, and restore peace, unity, and prosperity to Nigeria. Tambuwal also encouraged journalists to report responsibly and objectively on sensitive issues like insecurity, asserting that informed reporting could aid the country’s security efforts.
