Terror Strikes Again: American Pilot Abducted From ‘Secure Zone’ In Niamey

According to Ireporter Online, a 48-year-old American pilot has been abducted in Niamey, the capital city of Niger Republic. Security sources revealed on Wednesday that the pilot, who was reportedly working with a Christian humanitarian organisation, was kidnapped by armed men during the night.

The incident occurred in a highly secured district of central Niamey, sparking widespread concern among residents and the international community. Nigerien security agencies have launched an intensive, nationwide manhunt to locate the victim and apprehend those responsible.

While no group has yet claimed responsibility, security analysts note that militant factions linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State operate actively in Niger. However, such incidents within Niamey’s city limits are considered extremely rare, with the last known kidnapping of this nature dating back to 2011.

In a similar incident earlier this year, a 74-year-old Austrian woman and a 66-year-old Swiss woman were kidnapped in Agadez, a desert town roughly 950 kilometres north of Niamey. Reports suggested that both women, long-term residents of the area, were likely taken across the border into Mali and sold to Islamic extremists. Their whereabouts remain unknown.

Observers say the tri-border region shared by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger has become one of the most dangerous zones globally, plagued by terrorism and armed insurgency for over a decade. Niger’s security situation has further worsened since the 2023 military coup, which led to the suspension of cooperation with Western allies.

Authorities and international partners are reportedly monitoring the situation closely as search operations intensify.
