The Party Is Dying”: APC Chieftain Urges PDP To Merge With ADC Ahead Of 2027

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Farouk Aliyu, has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to consider a merger with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that the opposition party risks political irrelevance if it fails to act decisively.

According to Ireporter Online, Aliyu made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, where he urged opposition leaders to embrace compromise and unity in the interest of democracy.

The former lawmaker argued that persistent internal divisions within the PDP were weakening the party and threatening its survival, stressing that a strategic merger could serve as a pathway to revival. He maintained that combining forces with the ADC would help reposition the PDP as a viable opposition capable of challenging the ruling party.

Aliyu noted that the inability of opposition leaders to make concessions was undermining democratic growth, emphasizing that democracy thrives best when there is a strong and united opposition. He added that respected and capable Nigerians were members of both the PDP and ADC, making their continued fragmentation regrettable.

Lamenting what he described as the steady decline of the PDP, Aliyu warned that a weak opposition ultimately harms the democratic system, as effective governance depends on robust scrutiny and accountability. He stressed that opposing the government constructively was necessary to ensure citizens benefited fully from democratic governance.

The APC chieftain dismissed claims that the ruling party should be responsible for uniting the opposition, recalling that the APC itself was formed through the merger of several political groups that chose to set aside differences for a common goal. He questioned why the PDP could not take a similar step by aligning with the ADC if it was serious about regaining relevance.

Aliyu also insisted that the APC was not threatened by any potential opposition alliance, noting that governance was a collective responsibility that transcended political parties or individual leaders. He emphasized that Nigeria belonged to all citizens and not to any single political figure.

His comments come amid ongoing defections of prominent political figures, including governors and lawmakers, from opposition parties to the APC. The PDP is also grappling with a prolonged internal crisis, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s leadership, further weakening a party that governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015.
