In a decisive move to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against environmental degradation caused by oil pollution, President Bola Tinubu has announced the reappointment of Emmanuel Nwiika Deeyah, former member of the National Assembly representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency of Rivers State, as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), according to iReporter Online.

The announcement also includes the full reconstitution of the HYPREP Board of Trustees, signalling a renewed commitment to restoring the fragile ecosystem of the Niger Delta.

According to iReporter Online, this step reflects the administration’s focus on environmental sustainability and the urgent need to tackle hydrocarbon pollution in Nigeria’s oil-producing regions.

Alongside renewing Deeyah’s tenure, President Tinubu has appointed new members to the Board from diverse Niger Delta communities and environmental stakeholders.

The appointments include Fred Mbombo Igwe and Dr Fred Barivule Kpakol to represent the Ogoni communities, Dorcas Amos for other Niger Delta communities, and the reappointment of Chief Jide Damazio for NGOs active in environmental advocacy.

According to iReporter Online, the reconstituted Board is expected to work closely with the Governing Council and the Ministry of Environment to advance HYPREP’s mandate of cleaning up oil spill sites, promoting sustainability, and improving affected communities’ livelihoods.

This leadership renewal by President Tinubu comes amid longstanding challenges from hydrocarbon pollution affecting biodiversity, public health, and economic growth in Nigeria’s oil-producing states.

The move aims to enhance HYPREP’s ability to coordinate effective remediation efforts by fostering collaboration among government bodies, local communities, and industry stakeholders.
