Tinubu’s Bold Move with SEDC: A Step Toward Fulfilling Gowon’s 50-Year-Old Promise
Honorable Ifeanyichukwu Anthony Ibezi, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for his recent legislation establishing the South East Development Commission (SEDC). This move is seen as a significant step toward fulfilling a long-standing promise made by General Yakubu Gowon over fifty years ago.
After the Nigerian civil war, General Gowon promised “reconciliation, reconstruction, and rehabilitation” for the affected regions. However, as Hon. Ibezi pointed out, this pledge has remained largely unfulfilled for decades. The enactment of the SEDC is now being hailed as a crucial milestone in making that promise a reality.
“More than fifty years after the Nigerian civil war, General Yakubu Gowon’s promise of ‘reconciliation, reconstruction, and rehabilitation’ is yet to be fully fulfilled,” Ibezi remarked. “With the SEDC, President Tinubu is about to fulfill Gowon’s promise. I have already commended President Tinubu for his courage and statesmanship in signing the SEDC law.”
Hon. Ibezi underscored the transformative potential of this legislation for the South East, stating that it could mark a turning point for the region. He stressed that the SEDC law is not just another bureaucratic measure but a vital decision that could alter the future trajectory of the South East.
In recognizing President Tinubu’s bravery and commitment to the region, Ibezi expressed hope that this initiative would lead to lasting development and prosperity in the South East, finally delivering on a promise made over half a century ago.
