Several people have lost their lives, and others sustained injuries after a fire broke out during a New Year’s celebration at a ski resort in southern Switzerland. According to reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Crans-Montana, a popular luxury holiday destination in the canton of Valais.

Valais police spokesperson Gaetan Lathion confirmed that the fire erupted at approximately 1:30 a.m. at the Le Constellation lounge bar. “This morning, a fire broke out around 1:30 a.m. at Le Constellation lounge bar in Crans-Montana,” Lathion said. “There are several injuries and several fatalities.”

Authorities have not released the exact number of casualties, stating that investigations are ongoing. The cause of the fire remains unknown as emergency services continue to respond to the scene.

Lathion also noted that further information would be provided later in the day, with a joint press briefing by the police and the canton’s public prosecutor scheduled for 10 a.m. local time. Crans-Montana is renowned for its upscale ski resorts and draws thousands of visitors annually, particularly during the festive season.
