Tragedy Strikes As 10 Die In Ogun Road Crash

No fewer than 10 people lost their lives while three others sustained injuries in a tragic accident that occurred along the Ijebu-Ode-Ibadan Expressway on Friday night.

The incident happened when a vehicle carrying 15 occupants plunged off the Omu Bridge at the Awa Ijebu section of the expressway.

A local source identified as TMC told Sunday PUNCH on Saturday that the accident was likely caused by excessive speeding, which led the driver to lose control before the vehicle veered off the bridge into the river below.

Videos from the scene revealed lifeless bodies of passengers as bystanders struggled to rescue others trapped in the submerged bus.

TMC described the crash, saying, “An 18-passenger bus traveling from Ijebu Ode to Ibadan crashed into the river shortly after Awa, possibly due to over-speeding, resulting in about 12 fatalities.”

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the crash occurred around 8:30 pm on Friday. He added that emergency responders could not reach the accident site until early Saturday.

Akinbiyi identified the vehicle involved as a Mitsubishi bus with registration number EJ829-LSR.

He explained, “Eyewitnesses reported that wrongful overtaking at high speed caused the driver to lose control after sighting an oncoming vehicle. The bus swerved into the bush, hit a pile of abandoned gravel near the bridge, and then plunged into the river.”

According to him, 15 people were involved: 10 died—including three women and seven men—three were injured, while two, a toddler and an adult, escaped unhurt.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of Ijebu-Ode General Hospital.
