Troops Repel Boko Haram Assault on Lake Chad Naval Base, Kill Dozens

Nigerian troops under Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled a coordinated early-morning attack by Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents on the Naval Base at Lake Chad Fish Dam on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

The assault began around 2 a.m., as terrorists reportedly aimed to destroy Swamp Bogeys recently acquired by the Borno State Government to aid in clearing the area’s waterways. However, soldiers stationed at the base, with reinforcements from Baga, engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle that lasted more than two hours.

In a statement released on the Nigerian Army’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the military confirmed that a joint land, air, and maritime counter-operation neutralized dozens of insurgents.

“The terrorists initiated an infiltration mission but met stiff resistance from naval personnel,” the army noted. “Though they caused minimal damage—destroying an ambulance and two other vehicles—the attackers failed in their main objective and were forced to flee.”

The statement further disclosed that Improvised Explosive Device (IED) materials were recovered from the scene. Some military personnel sustained injuries during the clash.

Military aircraft were later deployed to pursue the fleeing terrorists across the waterways, with ongoing efforts to “further decimate” the attackers, according to the statement.
