President Zelensky’s announcement opens the door for foreign citizens legally residing in Ukraine to join the fight voluntarily, emphasizing the crucial role of international solidarity in defending Ukraine’s sovereignty.

This call to arms echoes Zelensky’s earlier plea in February 2022, when he first urged foreign fighters to stand alongside Ukraine against Russian aggression. Since then, approximately 20,000 foreigners have answered the call, forming a formidable force within Ukraine’s foreign legion.

Seeking to bolster its ranks further, Ukraine recently passed legislation reducing the age eligibility for fighters to 25 years old, aiming to recruit an additional 500,000 troops.
