30-year-old Hauwa Yusuf found herself at the center of a major security breach after being arrested by Special Tactical Squad (STS) operatives on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway. During a routine stop-and-search operation, authorities discovered an AK-47 rifle and four magazines concealed inside a sack of garri, a staple Nigerian food made from cassava.

According to police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, Yusuf revealed that she had been directed by Aminu Basullube, a notorious bandit known for his violent activities in Katsina State, to transport weapons from a camp in the Danum Madam area. Yusuf was initially tasked with transporting millet, but instead, she received a sack containing garri. She expressed her shock and regret, stating that she was completely unaware of the hidden weapon.

Yusuf admitted she was paid ₦130,000 for the job, with ₦15,000 allocated for transportation costs. Reflecting on the incident, she acknowledged her mistake in not questioning the sack’s contents before accepting the transport job. “I never knew that it was a weapon inside. They told me to bring millet, but unfortunately, they gave me garri instead. Even when I saw the item, I was apprehensive. I was given ₦130,000 to transport the garri to Katsina, and my transport fare was ₦15,000. I made a mistake by not asking questions,” Yusuf told The Punch.

This incident highlights the complex challenges faced in the fight against terrorism and banditry in Nigeria, underlining the importance of vigilance and thorough checks in security operations.
