disrupted the regular flow of activities at the ministry.
This protest follows a similar demonstration in December, during which retirees also shut down the ministry to press for their unresolved claims. Despite having received official approval for payment, the government attributed the delay to insufficient funds.
The retirees are seeking a 20% to 28% salary increment for the period from January to November 2024, along with other long-overdue benefits, including:
- Palliatives for the period of October 2023 to November 2024.
- A ₦32,000 increase in pensions.
- A lump sum payment for Security Debarment Allowance.
- Refunds for pension deductions made from soldiers who were medically discharged.
After the December protests, the Federal Government paid 50% of the outstanding entitlements and committed to settling the balance. However, the retirees argue that the government has not honored this pledge, prompting the renewal of their protest.
During the demonstration, the retirees blocked the ministry’s gates, preventing vehicles from entering. Ministry staff had to park outside the premises as the protesters insisted they would not leave until their demands were met.
