Valentine’s Day 2026: Peter Obi Charges Nigerians To Turn Love Into Action

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to move beyond the customary exchange of flowers and affectionate messages associated with Valentine’s Day and instead demonstrate genuine love through service, sacrifice and renewed dedication to national progress.

Valentine’s Day, observed annually on February 14, is widely known for romantic gestures and gift-giving. However, in a message shared on Saturday via his verified account, Obi stressed that the true essence of love should extend beyond personal relationships to embrace the collective wellbeing of the country. According to Ireporter Online, the former Anambra State governor titled his message “Nigeria Needs Our Love in Action,” urging citizens to translate sentiment into responsible civic engagement.

Obi described love as more than a fleeting emotion, characterising it as sacrifice, discipline and commitment to what is right. He emphasised values such as honesty, compassion, respect and devotion to the common good as essential expressions of patriotism. He particularly appealed to young Nigerians to reflect on their roles in shaping the nation’s future, noting that patriotism must be reflected in daily conduct rather than empty rhetoric.

Drawing a comparison between a country and a living organism, Obi stated that Nigeria can only thrive when nurtured with care and dedication. He encouraged citizens to promote credible elections, reject corruption, greed, division and mediocrity, and support leaders who demonstrate competence, character and commitment.

The former presidential aspirant further argued that loving one’s country requires the courage to highlight shortcomings and propose constructive solutions. According to him, remaining silent in the face of wrongdoing amounts to neglect rather than neutrality. He advocated for transparency, justice, competence and sustained investment in critical sectors such as education and healthcare, noting that integrity restores opportunity where corruption has eroded it, while unity promotes progress where division has sown conflict.

Obi maintained that if Nigerians extend the spirit of Valentine’s Day into public life, the results could be transformative, fostering stronger families, cohesive communities and accountable governance. He concluded by encouraging citizens to embrace love that strengthens the nation and wished Nigerians a happy Valentine’s Day.
