A violent clash erupted on Friday in the Okon-Aku community of Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State, resulting in the death of a young man, Igwe Akuma, from the Ndi Uma compound. The unrest also saw homes and vehicles set ablaze as youths retaliated amid rising tensions.

According to Ireporter Online, Igwe Akuma had been preparing for his wedding in the coming days before he was tragically killed. The Udumeze of Ohafia, Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, together with the Ohafia Council of Monarchs, condemned the killing and the acts of arson, describing them as unjustifiable.

In a joint statement, the traditional leaders called for restraint, emphasizing that “killing and destruction are not the best ways to begin a new year.” They urged reconciliation between the Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma compounds and reassured residents that efforts were underway with security agencies to prevent further escalation.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of Abia State, DSP Maureen Chinaka, stated that the Divisional Police Officer of Ohafia led officers to the scene, made arrests, and deployed two tactical teams to restore peace. She added that the suspects were undergoing interrogation and assured that police presence would continue to maintain law and order while investigations proceed.
