Why Mike Ejeagha Was Buried Within 24 Hours – Son Explains

Emmanuel Ejeagha, the eldest son of late Nigerian highlife legend Mike Ejeagha, has shed light on why his father was buried less than 24 hours after his passing.

The music icon, affectionately known as “Gentleman,” died at age 95 on Friday following a prolonged illness. In an interview with Vanguard, Emmanuel revealed that the family chose to honour the singer’s final wish—to be buried within a day of his death.

The quiet burial took place on June 7 in his hometown of Umuagba, Imezi-Owa in Enugu State, after the family reached a unanimous decision. Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State was informed and reportedly gave his full support.

“A meeting was held, and even Governor Mbah agreed that his wish should be respected,” Emmanuel stated. “That was my father’s final request.”

According to Emmanuel, a formal funeral ceremony is being planned for October 2025. A joint committee consisting of the family and the Enugu State Government will oversee the arrangements.

He also called on the Federal Government to honour his father posthumously, noting that despite Ejeagha’s significant cultural contributions, he was never nationally recognised during his lifetime.

Mike Ejeagha was a revered figure in Nigerian music, known for his unique ability to preserve Igbo oral traditions through melodic storytelling. His over 60-year career earned him acclaim for classics like Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche and a place in the hearts of generations of highlife lovers.

In 2024, his legacy experienced a revival when comedian and skit maker Brain Jotter featured one of Ejeagha’s songs in a viral dance video, reigniting interest in the veteran’s music among younger Nigerians.
