Wike Announces Work-Free Friday In Abuja, Imposes Movement Restrictions For Saturday

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day across Abuja ahead of the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21. According to Ireporter Online, the minister also announced a restriction of movement within the FCT from 8:00 p.m. on Friday until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday to ensure the smooth conduct of the polls.

Wike made the announcement during a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations, urging residents to turn out in large numbers to elect chairmen and councillors for the six area councils. He called on eligible voters to approach the exercise with a sense of civic duty and responsibility, stressing the importance of maintaining order and respecting the outcome of the election.

In a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the minister said the directives were approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He noted that security agencies have been instructed to enforce compliance with the movement restriction.

Wike also commended the President for assenting to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, describing the move as a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring that electoral processes remain free, fair and transparent. He emphasized that democracy is an evolving process and pledged continued efforts to review and improve the nation’s electoral framework.

The minister expressed optimism that the elections would produce credible leaders capable of fostering development, peace and prosperity within the Federal Capital Territory, urging residents to seize the opportunity to shape the future of their communities through the ballot.
