Wike Boosts Healthcare, Donates 12 Brand-New Ambulances To FCT Hospitals

According to Ireporter Online, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday presented 12 newly acquired ambulances to hospitals across the territory, in a move aimed at strengthening emergency healthcare services in Abuja.

The presentation, which took place in the nation’s capital, highlighted the FCT Administration’s resolve to enhance healthcare delivery, particularly in responding to critical and life-threatening medical emergencies.

Speaking at the event, Wike explained that the procurement of the ambulances aligns with the administration’s wider investments in road infrastructure, education and healthcare, stressing that effective emergency response is largely dependent on the quality of road networks. He noted that without accessible and durable roads, emergency vehicles would be unable to function optimally when patients require urgent attention.

The minister further revealed that the FCT Administration is currently rehabilitating and equipping 14 health centres across the territory, adding that directives have also been issued to the Head of the FCT Civil Service and other relevant authorities to recruit additional healthcare personnel to strengthen service delivery. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to providing quality healthcare for residents of the FCT.

Earlier, the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Olalodipo Fasawe, described the acquisition and distribution of the ambulances as a significant milestone in improving emergency healthcare within the territory. She said the initiative reflects the administration’s focus on people-centred governance, emergency preparedness and improved health outcomes.

Dr. Fasawe also noted that ongoing road construction projects across the FCT have enhanced access to healthcare facilities, particularly in rural communities, citing reduced travel times in areas such as Abaji, Kwali and Gwagwalada due to improved road networks.

In addition, she disclosed that the administration has taken steps to improve the welfare of healthcare workers, including settling outstanding allowances dating back to 2021. These payments, she said, include hazard allowances, wage awards and medical residency training funds, noting that the FCT has fully cleared these obligations.

Dr. Fasawe further revealed that the FCT Administration has upgraded the School of Nursing to a College of Nursing, describing the move as part of a coordinated effort to provide accessible, high-quality and sustainable healthcare services for residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
