Nigeria’s D’Tigress will begin their campaign at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup against South Korea in Berlin on Friday, September 4, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) expressing confidence that the reigning African champions can secure a positive result.

The opening Group B encounter is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., as D’Tigress return to the international stage following an intensive training camp and preparations under head coach Rena Wakama.

According to Ireporter Online, the Nigerian team will be particularly motivated by their previous encounter with South Korea, who defeated D’Tigress at the World Cup Qualifying Tournament in France earlier this year. Nigeria will be hoping to turn the tables and begin the global competition on a winning note.

NSC Director General, Bukola Olopade, commended the players and coaching staff for their discipline, patriotism and professionalism while urging Nigerians to rally behind the team throughout the tournament.

Olopade said he was confident that the players would give their best in every game, beginning with the clash against South Korea.

He also called on Nigerians to support D’Tigress with their prayers, stressing that the team would need the backing of the country as they seek a strong World Cup campaign.

Friday’s fixture will be the fourth meeting between Nigeria and South Korea, with D’Tigress winning two of their previous three encounters.

Following the opening game, Nigeria will face Hungary and European powerhouse France in Group B as they battle for a place in the knockout stages.

The group winners will advance directly to the quarter-finals, while teams finishing second and third will have to go through qualification games for a place in the last eight.
