Yahoo Boy Kills Girlfriend For Refusing To Remit Fraud Proceeds

Obeta John, a 27-year-old suspected internet fraudster also known as Yahoo boy, allegedly killed his girlfriend, Idowu Buhari, over claims that she refused to remit to him a fraud proceeds paid into the girl’s account by a victim.

The victim, an HND 1 Mass Communication student at Gateway Polytechnic Saapade in Ogun State, was allegedly beaten to death by the suspect.

Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Ogun State police spokesperson, said the suspect was apprehended Tuesday after a distress call was received at the Ode-Remo divisional headquarters.

According to the police, the suspect, a resident of 3, Mojubade Compound, Eredu Ishara, locked his door and began beating the girl, hitting her head against the wall.

Neighbors’ attempts to persuade him to open the door were futile, according to the Daily Post.

Following the distress call, CSP Fasogbon Olayemi, the DPO of Ode-Remo division, quickly led his officers to the scene, “where they met the victim in a pool of her blood after forcing the door open,” according to Oyeyemi.

The victim was rushed to the State Hospital in Ishara, where she was pronounced dead by the on-duty doctor.

The suspect, who is said to be an Enugu State native, is currently in police custody.

“On interrogation, the suspect informed the police that he is an internet fraudster and that a certain amount of money from one of his clients was paid into the account of his deceased girlfriend which she refused to relinquish to him,” Oyeyemi explained.

He quoted the suspect as saying that the fight over the money resulted in the girl’s death.

Meanwhile, Lanre Bankole, the State Commissioner of Police in Ogun, has ordered that the suspect be transferred to the State CIID for further investigation and prosecution by the homicide team.
