You Can’t Fight Grace – Wike Says Tinubu’s Triumph Was Heaven-Ordained

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his resilience and strategic prowess during the 2023 presidential election, attributing his victory to both divine favour and political experience.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Wike reflected on the turbulent period leading up to the election, highlighting the fuel scarcity and the controversial naira redesign policy, which he claimed were orchestrated by the previous APC-led administration to sabotage Tinubu’s chances.
“Whether the APC liked it or not, the road to victory was extremely rough for Tinubu. He could have easily lost that election badly. The fuel crisis and the naira redesign were a disaster,” Wike said.
He continued, “No ruling party would ordinarily introduce such policies during an election year, but everything was thrown at him—and yet, he pulled through. That’s how you know when someone has divine backing and a solid grasp of the political game. You must give him credit—God is clearly on his side.”
Wike, who previously governed Rivers State, also addressed internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that he would not support the party in the forthcoming FCT area council elections unless it resolves its internal crisis.
“If the PDP doesn’t get its house in order, I won’t back them for the area council polls. If they continue on this path, they won’t have my support,” he warned.
He emphasized that although he hasn’t directly nominated candidates, his influence remains substantial. “This crisis will consume the PDP unless the right steps are taken. I’ve never imposed candidates on governors, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t played critical roles. For example, in Bayelsa, my role was fundamental—ask the governor.”
Wike also reaffirmed his 2023 position on zoning the presidency, insisting that it should not return to the North until 2031.
“I said it then and I’ll say it again—until 2031, the presidency should remain outside the North. No one can convince me otherwise.”
