The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, and other senators-elect on Saturday night met with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators-elect ahead of the inauguration of the National Assembly tomorrow.

But Lawan and APC senators-elect avoided any commitment on who will be deputy Senate president or the number of committees to be conceded to the opposition party.

Lawan, who promised fairness and equity for all, said since he was nominated by APC, only his party could recommend who will be deputy Senate president.

The PDP senators-elect, led by a former deputy Senate president, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, had wanted to know who will be the next DSP.

They also asked Lawan and other APC senators-elect to be more forthcoming on the actual number of committee slots for the opposition.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the “frank session” was part of last leg of talks with caucuses and senators-elect.

A senator-elect at the session said: “We were well-received and we offered the PDP Caucus a solid assurance that we will run an all-inclusive Senate.

“We allayed fears of any discrimination or alienation.  The luck we have is that most of them are highly experienced lawmakers.

“But we avoided any commitment on the position of DSP. Lawan said he was a product of the party and only the APC can recommend a candidate for the office.

“On committee slots, Lawan only assured of fairness and equality of all. It was a fulfilling session. We hope to earn more votes from the main opposition party.”

Some of those at the talks with PDP were ex-Governors Ibrahim Gaidam, Umar Tanko Al-makura , Kashim Shettima,  Ibikunle Amosun,  Adamu Abdullahi and many APC Senators-elect.

Sen. Ajayi Borrofice last night stepped down for Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege for DSP.

”Following the intervention of one of our national leaders, Borrofice has conceded the slot to Omo-Agege.

“ We are hopeful that he might get one of the four remaining principal offices,” the source added.
