Edo : EFCC operative commits suicide

An operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly committed suicide in Edo State on Friday, September 6, 2019.

The officer identified by his colleagues as Oyibogare Esharenena Williams is reported to have drank sniper, a substance outlawed by Nigerian drug enforcement agency.

According to Daily Nigerian, Williams was found dead by his colleagues when several calls to his mobile phone were unanswered.

“We called his phone because unlike him, he didn’t come to work on Thursday,” an EFCC operative said.

“We decided to visit his home after close of work (on Friday), and we found him cold dead in his apartment.”

The colleague who did not want to be named said unknown pills, a bottle of sniper and a suicide note were found beside Williams’ body.

His corpse has been deposited in the mortuary for possible autopsy and subsequent burial.

Spokesman for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren did not respond to a telephone call and text message, seeking the commission’s response to the incident.

The incidence rate of suicide has increased recently in Nigeria, especially among students and workers owed months of salaries.

Williams’ colleagues said he did not show any sign of depression.

The increase suicide rate led to the banning of agricultural formulations of Dichlorvos (Sniper) by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in June, 2019.
