Catherine, who was a healthy size 12 when she married Hartley, told the Daily Record that she became so emaciated that she could wear clothes made for a seven-year-old child.

Catherine, of Irvine, Ayrshire, said: “After everything he did to me, to hear he has appealed his conviction – I just can’t believe it.”

Hartley was found guilty of assaulting Catherine three times between January 2004 and November 2016.

He had denied all wrongdoing.

In one incident, he allegedly attacked Catherine in front of her family by grabbing her by the neck, lifting her off the floor, throwing her across the room then sitting on her and trying to strangle her.

Catherine claims he attacked her because she had asked for food.

She also claims Matthew attacked her while she was pregnant.

After being found guilty, Hartley was given a community payback order with 12 months of supervision and walked free from court.

He was also placed on the sex offenders register for 12 months for sexually assaulting another woman.

Catherine said: “He was supposed to be punished but walked away with a slap on the wrists.
