Speakership:Trouble For Gbajabiamila As 195 members-elect sign for Bago

The support of Mohammed Bago, a popular contender for the speakership of the House of Representatives of the 9th National Assembly, has increased to 195 members-elect.

The support may have been due to the equity leadership Bago promises the members of the House.

Bago, who is a third member of the House from Niger state, is contesting for the seat against the Femi Gbajabiamila from Lagos state who has the endorsement of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

An unnamed member-elect from south west told newsmen that recent popularity of Bago was due to, among other things, the intelligent way he contributed at the interaction session organized by the rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held at the Transcorp Hilton.

He said: “Even within the ruling APC, Bago has so deftly sold his message that he is currently running neck to neck with Gbajabiamila for the signature of our party members.”

The lawmaker also added that the current crisis of confidence among chieftains of the APC is also working in Bago’s favour.

When the spokesman for Bago Campaign Organisation, Victor Ogene, was contacted, he said that the organization is very much focused on the members that would vote for them.

He said: “You know this is a contest involving only 360 members as the electorate, so we are focusing on those that would vote for us, instead of engaging in show-off trips.”

Reportedly, there are about 156 members-elect declaring their support for Bago after the meeting he held with them in Gwarimpa, Abuja recently.
