BREAKING: Details Emerge As Obasanjo Meets Tinubu’s Ally, Gov Abiodun

On Tuesday, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, had a private meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Abiodun arrived at the former President’s residence at 11.58 am and held a closed-door meeting with him, which he later described as private. He emphasized that there was no specific reason for his visit other than to see “our baba” (father).

During the meeting, the governor also addressed the issue of fuel subsidy removal. He expressed concern that Nigeria was losing N4 trillion annually due to the subsidy regime and asserted that the time was right to remove it. Abiodun assured Nigerians that the government would use the funds saved from the subsidy removal to improve the country’s economy.

He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to remove subsidies on petroleum products, acknowledging that it was a controversial but necessary initiative.

The governor acknowledged that the decision came with some hardships, but he urged Nigerians to endure the increased fuel price, as the benefits of the subsidy removal outweighed the pain.

To ease the impact of the subsidy removal, Abiodun’s administration had rolled out various palliatives for civil servants, pensioners, and the people of the state. These measures included providing N10,000 cash payments to each public servant and pensioner and granting hazard allowances to health and medical personnel in the state. These palliatives were designed in collaboration with labour unions to mitigate the effects of the subsidy removal on the populace.

Abiodun noted that these initiatives were part of the Federal government’s plan for implementation at the state level, and Ogun State had taken immediate action to start their implementation. He believed that these measures would alleviate the current economic challenges faced by the people, and he expected other state governments to adopt similar strategies.
