Why We Detained Soldier Preaching In Calabar – Army

The Army has clarified that Lance Corporal Musa Adamu, a soldier with the Amphibious Training School in Calabar, Cross River State, was detained for violating some provisions of the Armed Forces Act, not because of his change of faith.

The clarification was made in a statement by Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, in response to a publication by an online media outlet.

The media outlet claimed that Adamu was detained for 45 days and had his bank account frozen by the Army for preaching about Jesus Christ while in service uniform on social media, shortly after converting to Christianity.

The Army termed the publication as libelous and denounced it as a misrepresentation of the true situation, stating that it was an outrageous falsehood tainted with religious bigotry.

The statement emphasized that such misinformation could cause disaffection among personnel and bring disrepute and distractions to the army from fulfilling its constitutional mandate.

The statement provided the correct context of the incident, stating that Lance Corporal Musa Adamu was attached to 63 Brigade for participation in an ongoing operation when he was found preaching in uniform on a social media platform, which violated the extant Social Media policy for the Armed Forces of Nigeria. This led to his invitation for interrogation by the relevant authorities. However, instead of presenting himself for the investigation, he absconded for about six and a half months, resulting in his declaration as Absence Without Official Leave (AWOL). His actions were found to violate specific sections of the Armed Forces Act related to obstruction of provost officers and absence without leave.

The statement clarified that the freezing of Adamu’s salary account was an automatic consequence of being declared AWOL for being absent from his unit without justification for seven days or more. The detention of the soldier, therefore, was not unlawful but was carried out in accordance with statutory provisions enshrined in the Armed Forces Act.

Contrary to the mistaken belief that the soldier was being victimized for converting from Islam to Christianity and preaching the gospel, the statement reiterated that he was detained for investigation and in line with the statutory stipulations he had contravened. The Nigerian Army emphasized that its actions are guided by ethics, traditions, and military laws, and violations of these principles and statutory regulations lead to sanctions, regardless of the faith of the offender.
