On Wednesday morning, a tragic incident occurred at Eke Awka Market in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, where suspected cultists killed a member of a rival cult leader.

The victim, identified as Igwe Omeli, was known to be a notorious leader of a rival cult group in the area. He was allegedly involved in collecting levies on behalf of some market leaders.

According to witnesses, the attack happened around 7 a.m. when traders were opening their shops for the day’s business. Mr. Omeli had a disagreement with another cult group, and they launched a violent attack on him. Despite attempting to call for help from his gang members, they did not arrive in time to aid him.

Tragically, the attackers beheaded Mr. Omeli and mutilated his body before leaving the scene, taking the severed head with them.

The incident caused fear and confusion among traders in the market, prompting many of them to close their shops abruptly, fearing a potential reprisal attack.

The police spokesperson in Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and stated that the police had taken control of the crime scene. He mentioned that preliminary information indicated that the attack was related to a cult conflict. The police are actively conducting investigations, and witnesses are providing crucial information to help apprehend the perpetrators. However, the police spokesperson did not confirm the specific detail about the attackers taking the victim’s head with them.
