The suspension was prompted by a motion put forth by Darlington Nwokocha, a representative for Abia central, during Keyamo’s appearance before the lawmakers.

Nwokocha highlighted that Keyamo, who previously served as the Minister of Labour and Employment under former President Muhammadu Buhari, failed to respond to a parliamentary summons in 2020 regarding the employment scheme for 774,000 Nigerians recruited for the special public works program.

Enyinnaya Abaribe, a Senator representing Abia South, lent his support to Nwokocha’s motion to postpone Keyamo’s screening.

When Senate President Godswill Akpabio subjected the motion to a voice vote, there was no clear consensus.

As a result of the contentious situation, the Senate transitioned into a closed-door session to address the matter, during which media personnel were asked to leave the gallery.

Shortly after the tumultuous session, Senate President Akpabio made a swift visit to the Presidential Villa.

This move is likely connected to the events that unfolded during the confirmation hearing for Keyamo on the Senate floor.

On Friday, August 4, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Keyamo for the ministerial role. Keyamo’s nomination was conveyed through a letter directed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during the plenary session.

This nomination followed the submission of the second batch of ministerial nominees by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila on Wednesday, August 2.
