Although the purpose of Akpabio’s visit to the Villa was not yet clear at the time of reporting, it could be related to the heated confrontation that occurred on the Senate floor earlier in the day.

Just moments before, the Senate had erupted into chaos when Senator Darlington Nwokocha, representing Abia Central Senatorial District, put forth a motion to suspend Keyamo’s ministerial screening.

A visibly irritated Nwokocha accused Keyamo of showing disrespect towards the 9th National Assembly and alleging corruption within the previous Assembly.

Nwokocha pointed out that during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Keyamo had been summoned to clarify a Special Public Works program, but he had failed to honor the invitation.

Nwokocha’s motion was swiftly supported by Enyinnaya Abaribe, a fellow senator representing Abia-South Senatorial District.

Subsequently, the Senate President put the motion to a voice vote, which resulted in a split among the lawmakers.

This led to a tumultuous session in the red chamber. Amid heated debates among the senators, Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele proposed a closed-door session, a suggestion that Akpabio approved.

Keyamo, a former Minister of State for Labour and Productivity under the previous administration of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, hails from Delta State. He was the final nominee from President Bola Tinubu’s list of 48 ministerial candidates to appear before the Senate.

Keyamo’s appearance before the Senate took place on Monday afternoon, following the screening of another nominee, Mariya Mahmoud, a former Commissioner for Higher Education in Kano State.

Initially, Keyamo, aged 53, had not been included in President Tinubu’s first and second ministerial lists. However, in an unexpected twist, Tinubu replaced Maryam Shetty, a ministerial nominee from Kano, last Friday, and instead nominated Keyamo and Mahmood.

Before the tumultuous session, Keyamo expressed gratitude to Tinubu for the ministerial nomination, revealing that he had lost hope of joining the Federal Executive Council of the new President.

Keyamo had previously served as a spokesperson for the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council during the election process that led to the formation of the new administration on February 25, 2023.
