FG Sends Strong Warning To Obaseki (DETAILS)

Mohammed Idris 1536x1025 1

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has responded to Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki’s criticism of the Federal Government, stating that leaders at all levels should work together to improve the lives of Nigerians instead of engaging in unproductive political tactics.

Idris, who is newly appointed as the minister of information, conveyed his views in reaction to Obaseki’s statement that was prominently featured on the front page of Thisday Newspaper on Thursday, August 24, 2023. He expressed that Obaseki’s comments were not surprising.

Obaseki had criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, expressing shock and concern about the government’s inability to plan and effectively respond to the removal of fuel subsidy, which he believed exacerbated the hardships faced by Nigerians.

In his response, Idris wrote, “While it is common for leaders to have differing opinions, it is important to base criticism on reality and tangible outcomes.” He further noted that Obaseki’s focus on economic challenges seemed to divert attention from his own performance as Edo State Governor since joining the Peoples Democratic Party.

Idris explained that the removal of fuel subsidy had been advocated by many, including Nigerians, state governors from various political parties, international institutions like the World Bank and IMF, as well as economic experts. He highlighted that fuel subsidy distorted fiscal matters and burdened the economy.

He clarified that the removal of fuel subsidy had led to increased revenue allocation to Edo State and other states, as well as the doubling of FAAC allocation to Edo State in June and July 2023 compared to before the subsidy removal.

Idris suggested that rather than engaging in incomplete narratives, the focus should be on utilizing available resources to implement impactful projects for the betterment of the people of Edo State.

He emphasized that decisions made by President Bola Tinubu had positively impacted the national economy and had been applauded globally. He also pointed out that Governor Obaseki is a member of the National Economic Council (NEC), where significant decisions on the issues he criticized were made.

Idris concluded that Obaseki’s presence and insights at NEC meetings would contribute to the collective vision of improving Nigeria for the benefit of all citizens.
