The coup occurred after disputed elections in which President Ali Bongo Ondimba was declared the winner, ending the Bongo family’s six-decade rule.

The situation has raised concerns in the region, with Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu calling it a “contagion of autocracy.” The new transitional president, General Brice Oligui Nguema, will be sworn in on Monday.
