Why Tinubu Remains Legitimate President – NBA President

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Maikyau, has emphasized that President Bola Tinubu remains the legitimate President of Nigeria unless a court rules otherwise.

Maikyau made this statement during the presentation of the communiqué of the 63rd annual NBA conference in Abuja.

President Bola Tinubu’s victory is currently being challenged by candidates from the People Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, and the Labour Party, Peter Obi, at the presidential election petition tribunal.

However, Maikyau pointed out that despite the pending petitions, Tinubu holds the legitimate position of President based on the Constitution and relevant laws passed by the National Assembly.

He stressed that there is no legal provision stating that an election being challenged automatically makes the elected government illegal or unconstitutional. Maikyau urged lawyers and citizens to respect the government and its policies and not mislead the public with inaccurate statements.

Maikyau also defended the NBA’s invitation to President Tinubu to declare open the conference, emphasizing that the president holds the legitimate position of Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the law and showing respect for the office of the president.
