Floods: FG Reveals Most Affected States (FULL LIST)

The Nigerian government has classified states into three groups based on the severity of flooding experienced this year. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, announced this during a briefing with State House journalists at the conclusion of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting on Thursday.

Mr. Wike explained that a special committee established by the NEC conducted a comprehensive assessment across the country to gauge the impact of the floods. He outlined the categorization as follows:

Group ‘A’: States with over 15 points, including Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Rivers, Enugu, Kano, Oyo, Yobe, and Zamfara.

Group ‘B’: States with 10-15 points, namely Cross River, Delta, Jigawa, Kwara, and Ondo.

Group ‘C’: States with less than 10 points, which encompass Katsina, Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Gombe, Imo, Kaduna, Kebbi, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, and the Federal Capital Territory.

He further stated that the NEC instructed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to promptly provide assistance to the affected states, emphasizing the need for a collaborative effort with the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum to address the recurring issue of flooding.

Additionally, the meteorological agency, NiMet, has advised Nigerians to anticipate further flooding in certain states due to the projected rainfall volume.

Although more floods are anticipated this year, the situation has been relatively improved compared to the previous year, which saw over 600 fatalities and the displacement of over 1.4 million individuals due to flooding.
