The wife of Gabon’s deposed president Ali Bongo Ondimba, Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin, has been charged with “money laundering” and other offenses, the public prosecutor announced Friday.
This development comes a month after a coup ousted her husband.
Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin was charged by an investigating judge on Thursday, as revealed by Andre Patrick Roponat on state TV channels on Friday.

Since the August 30 coup in the oil-rich nation, she has been under house arrest in the capital, Libreville. Roponat also confirmed that her house arrest order has been upheld.
Earlier this month, one of her lawyers stated that she was being kept “incommunicado outside any legal framework.”
Their son, Noureddin Bongo Valentin, has already faced charges of corruption and embezzlement of public funds, along with several former cabinet members and two ex-ministers.
Ali Bongo, who had governed the central African country since 2009, was toppled by military leaders shortly after being declared the winner in a presidential election. The result was denounced as fraudulent by the opposition and the military coup leaders, who also accused his regime of extensive corruption and poor governance.
Ali Bongo assumed power in 2009 following the death of his father, Omar, who had been in power for nearly 42 years.
