Reason Why Africa Continues To Experience Coups – Jonathan Makes Revelation

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has emphasized the need to “rejig” democracy across the African continent in light of recent incidents of civil governments being overthrown. He expressed his concerns during a Democracy Dialogue 2023 event organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Jonathan highlighted the challenges faced by democracy in Africa, including issues of poverty and unemployment, which have eroded trust among citizens.

He emphasized that leadership should strive to translate democracy into economic well-being and encourage development.

The former Nigerian leader stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law, respecting citizens’ rights, strengthening public institutions, and implementing policies that positively impact people’s lives to ensure the enduring success of democracy.

The annual democracy dialogue, an initiative of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, brings together stakeholders from across Africa to critically examine democracy-related issues, assess its practice in Africa, and provide necessary recommendations.

The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse, emphasized the need for those in positions of authority to involve the people they govern in their actions and policies.

Prominent African leaders, including Patrick Lumumba and Omar Alieu Touray, also shared insights during the panel discussions.

Africa has witnessed several coups since August 2020, highlighting the urgency of reevaluating and fortifying democratic processes across the continent.
