VIDEOS And PHOTOS Emerge As Flood Takes Over New York Streets

Intense rainfall pounded the New York City area, causing widespread flooding, road closures, and transportation disruptions on Friday. Over 4 inches of rain, equivalent to a month’s average, drenched parts of Brooklyn in just three hours.

The National Weather Service warned of rainfall rates reaching 1 to 2 inches per hour, with totals potentially exceeding 8 inches in certain areas.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the ongoing danger, despite occasional breaks in heavy rain.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency, urging residents to stay home due to hazardous travel conditions. Firefighters conducted rescues in flooded basements, and over 150 schools in the city reported water intrusion.

The subway system and railways experienced significant disruptions, with multiple train lines suspended. Sewers were overwhelmed, leading to road closures and water rescues.

Flight delays affected all three major airports, and the Marine Air Terminal at LaGuardia Airport closed due to flooding. A travel advisory remains in effect, with further flooding anticipated.

The flood risk extends to roughly 25 million people across the Northeast, with southern New England, Connecticut, and Rhode Island particularly affected.
