Lagos State To Launch Eko Water Taxi To Ease Transportation Challenges

The Managing Director of LAGFERRY, Honourable Abdoulbaq Ladi Balogun, made this known during a management retreat themed “Sustainable Water Transportation and the Lagos Transport Policy,” where key stakeholders reviewed strategies aimed at improving water-based mobility in the state.

Balogun explained that the initiative aligns with the Lagos State Transport Policy introduced about three years ago, stressing that the retreat was focused on strengthening operational efficiency and ensuring long-term sustainability in the transport sector.

He noted that discussions at the retreat centered on enhancing human resource capacity and repositioning water transportation as a key driver of Lagos’ economic growth, while also promoting environmental sustainability and emission reduction.

The LAGFERRY boss disclosed that the proposed Eko Water Taxi service is expected to commence in the coming days, with initial deployment planned for the Lekki–Epe axis to help ease chronic traffic congestion and improve commuter experience for residents and businesses in the area.

He further revealed that the state is exploring broader innovations within the blue economy, including the introduction of electric boats and the expansion of cargo movement across waterways such as Lekki, Apapa, Ikorodu, Epe, and Badagry, aimed at reducing heavy-duty traffic on Lagos roads.

Also speaking, Director of Environment, Health, Safety and Quality at LAGFERRY, Samosa Taofeeq Olusoji, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to passenger safety, noting that strict safety measures are in place for both staff and commuters across all operations.

The Director of Finance and Accounts, Adekale Eniola, assured residents of reliable service delivery and safety compliance, emphasizing that operational systems have been strengthened to guarantee secure water transportation.

In the same vein, Head of Marine Operations, Engineer Amos Semasa, highlighted the expansion of LAGFERRY’s fleet and routes, stating that services now cover multiple jetties and senatorial districts across the state, supported by ongoing public awareness campaigns to encourage wider adoption of water transport.
